5. Add a Layer Mask to your model. WHITE REVEALS, BLACK CONCEALS! (Use a white brush to bring out the portrait and black to bring out the background) Use a low opacity on your brush to blend!
6. Also add a layer mask to the layer with your background on it. Hold Ctrl and click on the icon of your model to get them back in selection. You need to inverse your selection so that you can make changes to everything besides your model. CLICK ON THE LAYER MASK FOR YOUR BACKGROUND LAYER AND USE BLACK TO MAKE THE WHITE LAYER SHOW THROUGH.
7. Go back and forth between black and white on your layer masks to bring out the areas that you want.

The concentration clearly demonstrates an original vision and innovative ideas and/or risk taking.
An evocative, engaging theme is sustained through most of the work.

The work conveys a sense of successful transformation and growth
In general, the work is technically excellent; materials and media are used effectively to express ideas
Any apparent appropriation of published or photographic sources clearly provides a visual reference that is transformed in the service of a larger, personal vision in which the student’s “voice” is prominent. 6.J Although the works may show varying levels of accomplishment, overall the work is at an excellent level.
ASSIGNMENT:
On your own website under your "Concentration" page prepare a written statement that proposes your concentration idea. There are major points that I will be looking for on your proposal:
1. The Central Idea for your concentration: This is where you write your portfolio concentration idea and back it up with what it means: e.g.. My Concentration is pathways. I plan to capture different pathways that we encounter such as roads, trails, and other pathways used to get you from point A to point B.
2. What is the story behind your idea? What mood will be set and what emotions will your viewer feel? Tell me how you envision your photos to look. e.g. I want to create a variety of moods behind my pathways by shooting them during different weather, for different lighting. I also plan to create a shallow depth of field with some pathways to really bring the literal feeling of footprints in the sand, or some photos will have a deep depth of field to draw more attention to where the pathway is leading to. Each photo with have a different story.
3. What is your brand that will be associated with your body of work? This is what can make your concentration cohesive. We want similarities between each photo. This can include certain edits, your own style, color palette, focal point, subject matter, etc. e.g. For shooting pathways, I plan to use low saturation to make the viewer feel slightly melancholy wondering feeling for the viewer.
4. How do you plan on completing this concentration: When and Where do you plan to take these photos? e.g. I want to photograph footprints in the sand on the beach with the pier in the background out of focus. I also know of two trails in the mountains that I would like to include, using the time of day to create different moods within the photograph. In order to get to these locations, I must dedicate an two hours to shooting every Saturday. I can get to these locations because I have my own car.
5. Where, historically, do you find inspiration? What Research will you conduct? If you know of any photographers yet who have inspired you and you plan to integrate their style or ideas into your work, please let me know. You will be exposed to many photographers in class, so don't worry, you will find inspiration. (You will need to reference inspiration in your portfolio.) You will probably need to do additional research to be able to grow with your project. Are you going to research animal symbolism? Color symbolism? Studies on a specific area to give you a better understanding? Having a background knowledge on your idea will greatly help you to communicate to your viewer.
There is no required length for your proposal, I just ask that you hit these requirements. The more detailed your proposal, the more understanding that you will gain from it and the more clear you will feel about tackling your concentration portion of your portfolio.
